Innovative, airless SCR technology suitable for diesel-powered motor yachts and commercial shipping

Presentation (pdf)

“Schmidt Abgasanlagen UG" (limited), a young and innovative company, based in a region in Southern Germany which is well-known for its inventive talents at Aalen, developed a SCR exhaust gas treatment system which does not require air supply (airless) and, in addition, it does not require additional fuel after-injection in order to meet the upcoming emission thresholds for worldwide shipping.

Very restrictive worldwide legal directives for reducing emissions (NOx and sooty particles), according to BSOII, IMO/Tier III and Tier 5, will be the standard for shipping industry in the near future. This tightening emission directive forces an increasing demand of SCR technology without the given emission thresholds cannot be met.

At this stage, the cruising of a variety of water bodies such as North Sea (the Wadden Sea), the harbour of Genoa, Californian Coastline and some other American territories is restricted partially or completely. In the future, attractive coastlines in the Mediterranean area are out of reach for vessels which are not able to maintain these new emission thresholds

By applying our products, the cruising of protected water bodies and harbours is yet possible today!

Driven by public attention and ecological awareness of yacht owners, the vendors of yachts cannot avoid acknowledging the SCR technology. This market opportunity was recognized at an early stage, put into action and developed to a sound concept.

Goal of the company is production and marketing of SCR exhaust gas treatment systems for marine applications, targeting for the segment of an engine output from 200 kW up to 2 MW (referring to main, auxiliary and generator drives).

In addition, “re-fits” (upgrade of different types of used vessels) are possible. Our co- operation partners are enabled to offer solutions for new and used yachts and shipping vessels.

Due to the high effectiveness of our engine-independent SCR exhaust gas treatment system, the NOx emissions will be reduced nearly completely, also the sooty particles. This happens not the common way of a separated DPF (diesel particulate filter) with passive regeneration. Instead of that the carbon-particulate emission is reduced severely by a chemical process which goes on in the exhaust gas treatment system. For this reason, an exchange of catalyzers for regeneration is not required.

A SCR exhaust gas treatment system is tailored to the customer and will be developed, produced and assembled by ourselves. The system is engine-independent, that is to say it can be customized to any engine regardless to its power and to any engine manufacturer. An engine-specific certification – for example – would be assured by German Lloyd or by IMCI (by valid engine test bench operation). Alternatively, there is the possibility of a certification by certificate of exemption.

The process uses the harmless additive AdBlue because of the usage of a huge amount of ammonia is classified as a hazardous substance. For this reason, we not use ammonia.

The General Manager, Christian Schmidt, is specialized in development of exhaust gas treatment systems for huge diesel engines for many years. The team members add value to the company by contributing their long-lasting expert knowledge on their special areas. A highly qualified and motivated team is available to fulfil your demands.

It is our belief that vendors must decide to apply our technology as there is no time for near- term conversion. There are major competitive advantages to those who prepare themselves to the market’s demands far in advance!

At the moment, „Schmidt Abgasanlagen UG (limited)“, pioneers this subject and is one of the very few companies in this area who can provide such a innovative offering.
